How Release Year Challenge works
Eight rounds. Each one shows you a game and four candidate years, and exactly one of them is the year it actually shipped. The wrong options are drawn from other real release years in the same pool, so you cannot rule one out just because it looks implausible.
The pool spans 1994 to 2022, which is wide enough that era cues matter. Cover art style, engine look, and how a series numbered its entries will all get you further than guessing.
Tips
- Box art dates a game faster than anything else on screen.
- Sequels are usually two to four years after the entry before them.
- If two of the four years are close together, the answer is often one of those.
- A wrong guess costs you nothing but the round. There is no streak to protect.
- Questions are drawn fresh each run, so replaying is not the same eight games again.
- Try Genre Guesser on the same pool if years are not your strength.
Questions are generated at play time from 195 games in src/data/similar-games.json, sourced from RAWG.io by scripts/fetch-similar.py. Nothing here is hand-written trivia, so no answer can drift from its source. We have not independently verified every row.
